When Food Is Medicine: A Cancer Patient’s Story and 25 Years of Proof
By Stephanie Keegan, Founder — Healthy for Life Meals
Last December, Jessica was undergoing cancer treatment, exhausted from the toll it was taking on her body, and her partner was going to be away for a couple of weeks. She needed food that would be there for her on the days when just getting out of bed felt like enough. She did a Google search for healthy prepared meals in the Duluth, MN area — and found us.
A few weeks ago, I reached out to some of our customers to ask about their experiences. Jessica was one of them. Her reply stopped me in my tracks.
“I struggle with fatigue, and sometimes figuring out food for the week ahead just feels too hard,” she told me. “I wanted to make sure I had healthy food on hand that I could just warm up and eat — that way if I wasn’t feeling well, meals would just be ready to go. All I need to do is open, heat, and eat.”
Today, she is in remission.
I’ve been running Healthy for Life Meals for 25 years. In that time, I’ve heard versions of Jessica’s story more times than I can count — from people managing diabetes, heart disease, cancer, chronic fatigue, and a dozen other conditions that make the simple act of feeding yourself well feel impossible. What they all have in common is this: when you take food off the table as a problem to solve, people do better.
The GLP-1 Moment — and What It Means for Food
Last month, Medicare announced it would begin covering GLP-1 weight loss medications starting July 1, 2026 — making drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound available to millions of Americans who couldn’t previously afford them. I wrote about what that announcement means for our customers and what to eat to get the most out of GLP-1 therapy. The response was significant.
But as that conversation has continued, I keep coming back to something bigger: the GLP-1 moment is really a food-as-medicine moment. For the first time in a long time, there is a mainstream national conversation happening about the relationship between what we eat, how our bodies function, and what happens when that relationship breaks down. GLP-1 medications are one response to that breakdown. Medically tailored meals are another.
We have been the “another” for 25 years.
What the Research Shows
Our approach isn’t just anecdotal. A peer-reviewed, NIH-funded randomized controlled trial published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine studied participants with obesity who had failed to achieve expected weight loss on a supervised behavioral program. When those participants were switched to a regimen that included our meals — chef-prepared, nutritionally designed, and delivered weekly — more than 7 out of 10 lost a clinically meaningful amount of weight within six months, an average of 18.4 pounds. These were people who had already tried and stalled. Our meals moved the needle when nothing else had.
More than Weight Loss
Jessica’s situation wasn’t about weight loss. It was about survival — about finding a way to keep eating well during one of the hardest things a person can go through. Cancer treatment didn’t just threaten her health; it took away the energy she needed to feed herself well.
That is the gap we exist to fill. Not just for people managing weight. For anyone whose health — or life — makes eating well harder than it should be.
Our meals are freshly prepared each week by our culinary team, designed to meet specific nutritional requirements, and shipped directly to your door. No cooking. No planning. No decisions on the days when your time and energy are needed elsewhere.
They are also eligible for HSA and FSA purchase with a letter of medical necessity from your healthcare provider — because we have always believed these meals are healthcare, not just convenience.
